Nyjer loses oil as it ages. Stale seed is the usual reason a busy feeder goes quiet.
Can I use a normal seed feeder?
No — the seed pours out. Use a dedicated nyjer feeder with narrow ports.
Does it grow in the border?
It is heat-treated, so no.
